The "Cornmill Hotel" isn't just a meaningless name; the site once housed the engine house for the Holderness Corn Mill, whose tenant was a third generation miller, Joseph Rank, who started in the business with an inheritance from his father that enabled him to rent a small flour mill in Hull, situated right where the hotel now stands.
Joseph Rank was something of an entrepeneur, regularly exploring revolutionary milling and refining techniques, and his growing business was an important part of the Hull economy. Eventually, Josephw went on to construct several new mills around the town and on the banks of the Humber.
